How do we leave an impact for Christ that lasts in Africa?

This is the best way we’ve found: Seek and disciple believers in a certain people group who will start a church that will multiply itself after we’re gone. That’s called a Church Planting Movement, or CPM.

First, let’s challenge our idea of a church.

Close your eyes and think about what comes to mind when you hear the word church.

Pews, steeples and stained-glass windows? Bibles, songbooks and choir robes?

Not so much.

A church is a body of baptized believers worshipping God, learning together from the Word, and reaching out to others.

Considering that definition, what is really necessary to have a church?

Do you need to build a building? Recruit a choir? Hire a pastor? Meet once a week on Sundays?

Nope. That’s just how we’ve adapted church in America. Here’s what the Bible says about what you really need:

“For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” – Matthew 18:20

“Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?” – 1 Corinthians 3:16

How does a church multiply?

It’s pretty simple. Even a semester missionary can take on this challenge:

1. Evangelize an area and find a seeker who will listen to you.
2. Disciple him/her and hold him/her accountable to share with others.
3. Encourage new believers to get baptized, meet regularly and continue sharing.
4. Train them in ways to grow in their faith, and make sure they can train others, who can train others…

Many of our HandsOn missionaries will be directly involved in church-planting while others will be in support roles, but all are working toward the same goal of starting Church Planting Movements among people groups in Sub-Saharan Africa.
